Birds and Windows

Why do birds fly into windows ?

Birds often hit windows because they see reflections of trees, bushes, or themselves instead of the glass. Birds are especially likely to fly into windows during mating season because they think they are seeing another bird. Hanging streamers, ribbons, or decals on the outside of the window can minimize this occurrence.

When a bird flies into your window .......

Sometimes birds break their necks and are killed instantly after they hit a window. Thousands upon thousands of birds die this way every day. But often a bird is simply stunned and needs to recuperate before it can fly away.

If a bird hits your window and is sitting on the ground, stunned, place it in a paper grocery bag with a towel in the bottom. Close the bag, put a clip on the top, and leave it alone in a warm, quiet place for about an hour. If the bird starts to flutter around in the bag, take the bag outside and open the top. If the bird can fly out it will be okay. If it can not get out of the bag, keep it in the bag and bring it immediately to the The ARK. Sometime birds will bruise their wings or heads, and will need to be supported while they heal.
