Transporting an Animal to the Center |
|
It is important to keep the animal warm and quiet when transporting it to the Center. As a general rule, keep it in a towel in a box with no food or water. The box should be just large enough that the animal is comfortable. It is important not to feed a chilled animal, and the wrong food could kill it --- do not feed the animal. Make sure the animal can not get out of the box, and make enough air holes for proper ventilation. Give it a heat source if it is a baby. Use a hot water bottle or fill a plastic bottle with hot water, wrap the bottle in a towel, and place it in the box with the animal. Remember, injured animals are frightened and in pain. Biting and clawing are natural defenses. Use extreme caution, and call if you have questions. If for some reason you can not take the animal to the center immediately, it is extremely important to keep it warm and quiet. Place a heating pad under half the box and set it on low. The shock of being handled by humans is often harder for the animal than anything else. Handle the animal as little as possible and keep children and loud noises away. Many people worry about the animal having food and water. Do not worry about feeding the animal. You can place a shallow dish of water in with the animal but do not worry if it does not drink. It simply needs to be quiet and warm.
